More Than a Title: Honoring the Power and Presence of Mothers

More Than a Title: Honoring the Power and Presence of Mothers

In every culture, in every generation, the role of a mother has never just been about biology. It has always been about presence. About responsibility. About love.

Mothers are the first teachers, the first protectors, and often the first prayers we ever know. They are the pillars of peace, the healers of emotional wounds, the nurturers of faith, and the living examples of humility and sacrifice. Their influence ripples far beyond the walls of their homes—it shapes entire communities, cultures, and futures.

On this Mother’s Day, we’re pausing not only to celebrate our personal mothers, but to reflect on the divine strength of women who mother in every form—biological or not—and the deep impact of maternal love in our history and daily lives.

Mothers as the Backbone of Community

Throughout history, when systems failed and resources were lacking, it was mothers who stepped in—not just to care for their own children, but for entire neighborhoods.

  • In the 1960s and 70s, Black mothers across the U.S. led food justice programs, creating free breakfast programs for children before the school day began—long before it was institutionalized. These programs later influenced the development of broader initiatives like the federal WIC program (Women, Infants, and Children), which provides nutritional support for low-income mothers. It was maternal advocacy, not policy, that first made this possible.

  • In tribal and ancestral communities, women were collectively responsible for the nurturing and education of all children. Grandmothers, aunties, and elder women taught younger generations through stories, hands-on work, and prayer. They weren’t just raising children—they were raising a people.

  • In local churches and mosques, women organized tirelessly as secretaries, administrators, and ministry leaders, ensuring events ran, youth were taught, and community needs were met. Their names may not always be remembered, but their labor was foundational.

Motherhood is Leadership

Motherhood isn’t passive. It is active leadership. To mother means to anticipate needs before they are voiced, to multitask with grace, to budget and manage, to discipline and guide, and to pour love into spaces where pain or absence once lived.

Our mothers teach us:

  • How to love people who don’t always love us back.

  • How to rise early, go without, and still give our best.

  • How to pray even when the outcome is uncertain.

  • How to carry grief and joy at the same time.

They show us what it means to serve with vision—and when we take time to value that, we realize that the roots of any strong community are often held together by the wisdom of mothers.

Let Us Remember the True Sentiment

As we walk through this season of flowers and cards, let us not forget the weight and wonder of what it means to be a mother—and to be mothered.

Let us tell the stories of:

  • The mother who braided her child’s hair with scripture and affirmation.

  • The grandmother who sacrificed her dreams so her children could pursue theirs.

  • The neighbor who made extra plates for children in the apartment upstairs.

  • The women who pulled together rides, meals, and prayers for mothers in shelters.

This is motherhood, too.
